Hello! I am a Postdoctoral Researcher in urban geography at the School of Geography and Planning, Sun Yat-sen University. I study where cultural production happens — why film, festivals and platform media settle in some cities rather than others, and what that division of work means for the people doing it.

Cultural industries are rarely spread evenly. Particular cities end up with particular kinds of work: commissioning, writing, shooting, post-production, localisation. Those allocations are shaped less by cultural prestige than by labour markets, industrial histories, costs and institutional conditions, so I look at cities relationally — through their position in uneven production networks rather than as self-contained cases.

My doctoral research asked why film festivals in China took hold in inland cities such as Xining and Pingyao rather than Beijing. It has appeared in Journal of Urban History and City, Culture and Society, and is being developed into a monograph.

I am now following short drama — mobile-format series made for platform distribution — as its production network extends from China into Southeast Asia. Fieldwork is ongoing, and I am always glad to hear from people working in or on this industry.
